Introduction

Season 1 of the return of DaredevilDaredevil: Born Again — was pretty good. Yeah, it had its faults, and I don’t think it ever rose to the greatness of the original Netflix seasons (you can read our review here), but I still scored it a solid 8/10. Now, a year later, we return to Matt Murdock and his battle to end the evil that is Kingpin’s reign as the mayor of NYC — but is this second season the return we wanted, or does the devil need to crawl back into the darkness he came from? Let’s see how the season is faring so far in our first impressions of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2! Minor spoilers to follow, as this is the second season after all.

Why You’ll Like This

Matt Murdock/Daredevil had lost quite a bit in the first season of Born Again — his best friend Foggy Nelson, and he nearly lost his former love interest Karen Page after his apparent death tore a hole in their bond. Thankfully, through new allies and a few internal battles, Matt and Karen rose from the depths of despair to realize they had a new fight ahead of them: to end Wilson Fisk — Kingpin — once and for all. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 throws us right back into that battle, quickly pulling us into a web of drama. Fisk is clearly stepping on the wrong toes as he continues to dismantle vigilantes through his “task force,” and Matt is starting to bring the fight closer to Fisk’s front door. What I love about this second season is that there’s no more setup and no unnecessary drama padding things out. This is a war, and our key players are beginning to fight despite the enormous risks.

Season 2 is also bringing back a lot of what I loved from the original Netflix series. One episode in particular mirrors the iconic hallway fight from the first season of Daredevil, featuring continuous shots and brutal, hard-hitting combat. It looked great and was filmed excellently. The pacing is also more engaging this time around — episodes no longer feel like they’re stalling to build up a plot we already know is in motion. Yes, Matt is trying to take down Fisk, and yes, there are people on both sides with hidden agendas. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 throws a lot of its key players at you within just three episodes and makes for a fun, brutal, and genuinely exciting new chapter in this reboot.

Is It Worth Three Episodes?

Those who loved Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 won’t need me to convince them to watch Season 2. If you were like me — someone with mixed feelings about the first season — I can say this season is already outpacing it by some strides. More battles, better character development, and some intriguing schemes brewing beneath the surface make Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 quite fun to watch. I do notice some potential issues with a few new characters seemingly filling the roles of past ones, but it’s far too early to say whether those choices will hinder what is shaping up to be a strong outing so far.

Conclusion

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is, without a doubt in my mind, already an improvement over the previous season. I love the new fight cinematography, our original cast is still here acting their hearts out — Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio as Daredevil and Fisk respectively — and we’re already seeing newcomers like Matthew Lillard (Five Nights at Freddy’s and Scream) step in for what look to be significant roles. I have a lot of hope for this second outing, and I already think we have a real shot at a better season overall. Let’s just hope the devil is prepared to fight — and not falter — when the big battles finally arrive.
