“Ultimate retro goodness returns…again”

Introduction

As a 2D fighting game fan (even if I’m not the best at them), I’ve always admired the art styles and energy they bring. I remember the disappointment back in 2011 when Phantom Breaker was delayed, but eventually we got a spin-off beat ‘em up, Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds, which turned out to be a nostalgic trip. Now, nearly a decade later, Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate has landed on PS5 thanks to Rocket Panda Games—the folks behind Phantom Breaker: Omnia. But does this game warrant another re-release? Let’s find out in our full review! Big thanks to Rocket Panda Games for providing us with a review code!

For those new to the genre, a beat ‘em up is just what it sounds like—defeating hordes of enemies in chaotic fashion. Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate sticks to this formula but spices it up with fighting game mechanics—special attacks, grapples, defensive options, and flashy combos unique to each character. Fans of classic arcade titles will feel right at home, while new players can quickly pick up the action.
The game offers a handful of modes, including Story Mode, Arcade Mode, Co-Op Mode, and Battlegrounds Mode:

  • Story Mode lets you take one of the four heroines (Mikoto, Waka, Yuzuha, and Itsuki) through their unique narratives. While the plot is nothing groundbreaking, fans will enjoy the character moments.
  • Arcade Mode is where the real action lies, offering time and score attack missions, letting you unlock stages and refine your runs.
  • Co-Op Mode brings four-player mayhem that really channels the spirit of arcade gaming. Whether playing online or solo, this mode delivers chaotic fun.
  • Battlegrounds Mode shifts the focus to PvP-style combat, offering a ton of characters with distinct playstyles. Think of it as a casual fighter mode that’s more fun than competitive.

Even if you’re playing solo, there’s plenty to enjoy and explore—especially with bots available when online lobbies are quiet. Overall, gameplay feels tighter, more fluid, and packed with value.

The original pixel art style still holds up, but Battle Grounds Ultimate received a noticeable visual upgrade, now running on Unreal Engine 5. Character sprites, backgrounds, and animations look more vibrant than ever. Whether you’re on a 4K screen or your PS Portal, it looks stunning. And yes—that new anime opening? A must-watch every time I boot the game up.

Sound

The soundtrack is excellent, offering three selectable versions while you play. English voice acting is also included, a nice touch for accessibility. Honestly, I’d love a physical copy of this OST—especially that remix of Steins;Gate. It’s car playlist-worthy.

Story

The Phantom Breaker universe has always been quirky, and this spin-off dials it up. With interdimensional hijinks, ninjas, and other assorted oddities, the plot is chaotic but fun. The writing is comical at times, and longtime fans will probably get a kick out of it. Still, story isn’t the main draw here—it’s the action.

Pros

  • Updated visuals and Unreal Engine 5 polish
  • Plenty of modes and replay value
  • Old-school gameplay with modern smoothness

Cons

  • Price tag may deter returning players
  • Multiple re-releases could make it feel redundant
  • Story remains secondary and underwhelming

Overall Score

8.5

Conclusion

While I’m usually skeptical about re-releases, Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate won me over. With meaningful content additions and solid visual enhancements, this latest version is the best way to experience this retro-inspired beat ‘em up. It’s not flawless, and veteran players might not be itching for another go—but for newcomers and fans of the genre, it’s a solid pickup. Now let’s hope the next step is a new Phantom Breaker title altogether!
