We are delighted to share our experience with the home video Blu-ray release of Ghost Cat Anzu from Studio MIYU, Shin-Ei Animation, and GKIDS Films. Ghost Cat Anzu is available for pre-order and will ship on March 4, 2025, starting at $17.99 USD during the pre-order period. After that, the price will increase to $22.98 USD.

Ghost Cat Anzu originally premiered in Japanese theaters in 2024 and in the U.S. in Novamber last year. It was well-received by fans who supported the studios and companies behind its creation.

Packaging & Design

The first thing to notice about Ghost Cat Anzu is its packaging. It is simple but the cover art is nice and a great representation of the film and what it entails. The cover slip has a wonder landscape artwork that is appreciated when you take it out of the cover area.

Background

Ghost Cat Anzu is based on the manga of the same name and is co-directed by renowned artist Yoko Kuno, making her feature directorial debut, and Nobuhiro Yamashita, the acclaimed director of Linda Linda Linda. Co-produced by Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions, with music composed by the legendary Keiichi Suzuki (EarthBound), Ghost Cat Anzu delivers a wildly entertaining journey through the countryside.

Plot

The story follows Karin and her father, Tetsuya, as they arrive at Sousei-Ji Temple, where her grandfather resides. Tetsuya, struggling with gambling debts and pursued by loan sharks, decides to leave Karin at the temple to ensure her safety. Three years after her mother’s passing, Karin finds herself abandoned again.

While living at the temple, Karin meets Anzu, a ghost cat. Anzu, once an abandoned kitten, was cared for by Karin’s grandfather and mysteriously never died. Upon turning 30 years old, Anzu transformed into an anthropomorphic cat, earning the respect of the local community while taking on odd jobs.

Tasked with watching over Karin, Anzu finds it challenging as Karin remains withdrawn, struggling with grief and boredom. She eventually begins causing trouble, sabotaging Anzu’s work, and mistreating those around her.

Karin soon becomes the target of the God of Poverty. While humans cannot see these gods, forest spirits and sprites can. Recognizing the danger, Anzu tricks the deity into taking Karin to meet her deceased mother in the Kingdom of the Dead. The entrance? A decrepit toilet stall.

Upon reuniting with her mother, Karin’s joy is short-lived as Lord Enma, ruler of the underworld, pursues them. As chaos erupts in Tokyo, Karin is faced with a difficult choice: to stay with her mother or return to the land of the living.

After receiving encouragement from her mother to live a full life, Karin chooses to move forward. Returning to the temple with Anzu and the forest spirits, she finds newfound happiness and purpose.

Art & Animation

The animation in Ghost Cat Anzu is beautifully drawn, featuring vivid, saturated colors that blend seamlessly. The film integrates CG elements that enhance its modern aesthetic. Depth of field, zoom effects, and smooth character movements contribute to a visually stunning experience. The voice acting is also top-tier, bringing life to the characters.

Music & Sound

The soundtrack is a standout feature, perfectly complementing each emotional moment. From lighthearted scenes to tense encounters, the combination of traditional Japanese instrumentation and modern compositions immerses the audience in the film’s folklore-inspired world.

Blu-ray Bonus Features

The bonus content included with the Blu-ray release is limited but still offers a few extras:

Overall Impression

Ghost Cat Anzu is a heartfelt story about loss, acceptance, and personal growth. Karin’s journey from grief and mischief to self-discovery makes for a compelling narrative. The themes of Japanese folklore, spirits, and the underworld are woven naturally into the story, providing an authentic cultural experience.

The pacing starts slow but gradually builds, reinforcing the story’s emotional weight. The balance between humor, adventure, and heartfelt moments makes Ghost Cat Anzu an enjoyable watch.
