The First-Ever Major Collaboration Between the “Evangelion” Series’ Studio khara and Sunrise

Film to Premiere in North American Theaters on February 28, 2025

GKIDS, the Academy Award®-winning producer and distributor of acclaimed and artist-driven animation, has acquired the theatrical distribution rights for North America to the highly anticipated film, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-. This collaboration marks the first major partnership between khara (the studio behind the Evangelion series) and Sunrise, the iconic creators of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. The film will debut in North American theaters on February 28, 2025.

Film Details

The film is directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (FLCL, EVANGELION series), with Yoji Enokido (screenwriter for Revolutionary Girl Utena, FLCL) serving as Series Supervisor and Screenwriter. Hideaki Anno (EVANGELION series, Shin Godzilla) also contributes as a screenwriter for the film. The project boasts an all-star creative team that includes Take (illustrator for Katanagatari, Zaregoto, and Pokemon series) as character designer, and Ikuto Yamashita (EVANGELION series, Shin Kamen Rider) as the mechanical designer.

Official Series Synopsis

Amate Yuzuriha is a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony floating in outer space. Her life takes a turn when she meets a war refugee named Nyaan and is drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle. Under the entry name “Machu,” Amate battles day after day, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. However, things take a dramatic turn when an unidentified Gundam mobile suit, pursued by both the space force and the police, appears before her, along with its pilot, a boy named Shuji. Their world is about to enter a new era.

About the Production

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- is a theatrical debut created from re-edited episodes of the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX TV series. The film was first announced in Japan on December 4, 2024, along with character and mechanical designs, as well as a theatrical teaser. The film will be released in Japan on January 17, 2025, while release information for the upcoming TV series remains to be announced.
