“Miku x MP3”

Introduction

Call me old—please don’t—but I love my now dubbed “retro” devices. I still own a Walkman—look it up on Google—and I use an MP3 player occasionally over my phone. There’s just something cool about rocking older tech that still works and looks kind of stylish…at least I think so. That’s why I give credit to companies like HiBy, who meld old-school style with new-age features.

Case in point, the HiBy M500, which feels like a fusion between an MP3 player and a cassette player. HiBy has done collaborations before, including one with Neon Genesis Evangelion, but today we’re reviewing the collaboration with Hatsune Miku, one of my favorite VOCALOIDs ever. Is the HiBy Digital x Hatsune Miku: M500 worth the very heavy price tag, or should you just keep rocking your old iPod Shuffle for that nostalgic feel? Time to find out.

Design/Texture

As a Hatsune Miku fan—I own several collaboration items—I can tell when a product is just a cash grab and when it genuinely respects the fandom. The M500 earns its full title. The device feels solid and looks premium right out of the box. The background design screams Miku, and the system’s color palette reflects her signature aesthetic.

When you boot it up, the Miku love continues. Multiple Miku-themed wallpapers, a boot screen featuring her silhouette and eyes (slightly eerie in a good way), and small touches like a chibi Miku rising and falling with the volume rocker show real attention to detail. You can even tap the chibi Miku for cute reactions. HiBy clearly went all in with the design. And yes, there’s a camera…but it’s not good, so let’s just move on.

Comfort

The HiBy M500 isn’t as tiny as an iPod Shuffle or even a ZUNE, but it still feels comfortable in hand. As someone who owned a cassette player, I appreciate how naturally it fits in the palm and how easy it is to operate without fatigue. The buttons don’t perfectly replicate cassette controls, but they echo the concept well enough.

My only comfort-related complaint involves pocket use. If you skip the included case, the buttons can activate too easily in your pocket. There is a function button to lock controls, but I noticed it could unlock more easily than expected. Still, overall, the M500 feels sturdy and satisfying to hold, especially for retro audio fans.

Packaging

Opening the box felt like unwrapping a premium collector’s item. Even non-Miku fans would have to admit the packaging is stunning. The box design is vibrant, anime-inspired, and screams quality. It now proudly sits on my desk simply because it looks that good.

Inside, you’ll find two cases—one clear and one textured green—along with screen protectors and extra accessories. You even get a Hatsune Miku pin. I’m not a big pin collector myself, but plenty of fans will appreciate that addition. The packaging elevates the overall experience and makes the steep price feel slightly more justified.

Price

Now for the tough part. The Wi-Fi version of the M500 costs $319, while the 4G version runs $349. The bundle that includes the YUME IEMs costs $459 ($489 for 4G). Yes, your wallet will feel that.

Personally, unless you plan to use the M500 as a semi-smartphone, I’d recommend sticking with the Wi-Fi version. I’d also strongly suggest the YUME IEM bundle if you’re interested, since the IEMs alone cost $149. Bundling saves you a bit overall.

Program Specs

Let’s talk specs. The standout feature is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC, which is impressive for a device this compact. It includes a 4GB RAM + 64GB storage configuration, with microSD support for expansion.

For audio performance, the HiFi-grade dual DACs (Dual CS43198) ensure high-quality playback. Battery life clocks in at roughly 26 hours of playback and over 558 hours on standby. That’s seriously impressive for a dedicated audio device.

Longevity

At this price, durability matters. With included screen protectors and cases, there’s no immediate concern about fragility. The device feels solid, and with proper care, it should last for years. Given its retro inspiration and build quality, I expect it to hold up well over time.

YUME IEMs Side Note

I opted for the YUME IEM bundle, so here’s a quick note. The earbuds allow for interchangeable connectors and wrap over the ear for improved comfort. The twisted cable reduces tangling, and the included case plus multiple ear tips add value.

Are they worth $149 individually? That’s debatable. They sound very good, but the price may feel steep if purchased separately. If you plan on buying both the M500 and the YUME IEMs, bundling is absolutely the smarter move.

Overall Impression

I love the HiBy Digital x Hatsune Miku: M500, but fully recommending it isn’t simple. As a Miku fan and audio enthusiast, this was an easy buy for me. But asking others to spend nearly $320? That’s harder.

If you love retro-style audio devices enhanced with modern specs—and you love Hatsune Miku—then the M500 is a fantastic purchase. If you don’t share that passion, you may find it difficult to justify the cost. This is undeniably a niche product, but for the right buyer, it delivers.

Pros

  • Stylish Hatsune Miku design that truly respects the fandom
  • Retro-inspired cassette-style controls
  • Beautiful and responsive touchscreen
  • Impressive internal specs for a portable audio device

Cons

  • Expensive for what is essentially a niche MP3 player
  • Buttons can be overly sensitive in-pocket
  • Very niche audience appeal
  • Camera feels unnecessary

Overall Score

7.5

Conclusion

I knew the HiBy Digital x Hatsune Miku: M500 was something I wanted. Is it a product I can tell everyone to buy immediately? No, not quite. But if you love Hatsune Miku and enjoy modernized MP3 players with a retro twist, then the M500 is worth every penny.
